Diseases of the cardiovascular system are among the most common in our society. Our approach is to treat them, or preferably to prevent them, by natural means.
Diseases such as heart failure, coronary heart disease (CHD) or myocardial infarction are unfortunately very common. Therefore prevention is always the best way forward. There is a selection of vital substances that can be used with amazing results, but even if you already suffer from a cardiovascular disease, we have a selection of options to improve your blood values, reduce vascular deposits and eliminate risk factors.
Prevention of cardiovascular disease
In orthomolecular medicine, we focus on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases through a healthy diet and moderate exercise, as well as the administration of omega-3 fatty acids, OPC, magnesium and vitamin K2. With the so-called HS-Omega-3 Index we measure, for example, the level of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in the red blood cells (erythrocytes), together with 24 other fatty acids. A low HS-Omega-3 Index means a high risk of heart attack, sudden cardiac death and heart failure. Depending on the test result, the dosage of omega-3 fatty acids can be adjusted.
High cholesterol level
Here our opinion and that of orthodox medicine diverge to some extent. Orthodox medicine, for example, attaches great importance to an "elevated" cholesterol level in the blood, whereas we take it very calmly. Cholesterol, a fat-like substance, is needed to build the cell membrane. This substance is therefore an important component of cells and tissue and is also responsible for the transport of fat as well as indispensable for the formation of certain hormones.
Cholesterol reduction with statins not always necessary - differentiation is required
In orthodox medicine, so-called statins are often prescribed, i.e. drugs that lower cholesterol levels. Statins can cause side-effects: for example, they can extract co-enzyme Q10 from the body, which is responsible, among other things, for energy production in the body's cells. Or they can inhibit the formation of vitamin K2, which protects the arteries from calcification. It is also not uncommon to experience muscular or skeletal complaints.
We will be pleased to advise you whether statins are a compelling necessity for you or not. Due to the not uncommon side effects such as muscular and skeletal complaints and as "micronutrient predators", it is worth taking a closer look at the vessels.
However, it would be unreasonable to generally advise against a therapy with statins, especially in the case of pre-loaded vessels or heart patients. The choice of different statins also has a decisive influence. If we advise you to continue taking statins in your individual situation, we will be happy to explain to you how you can prevent the side effects mentioned above.
The necessity of a cholesterol-lowering or deposit-stabilizing therapy can first be checked by means of a vascular ultrasound examination, in which we look for existing deposits on the vessel walls.
If, in spite of an increase in cholesterol, there are no abnormal vascular conditions (carotid, abdominal, inguinal arteries and their intersections), drug therapy with statins can be dispensed with in most cases. We then recommend an adjustment of your lifestyle, an optimal diet (supplemented with food supplements if necessary), which can maintain or improve your blood vessel situation.
However, especially in the situation of plaque deposits, which are demonstrably unstable in vascular ultrasound, i.e. in danger of "breaking off" and closing blood vessels (main mechanism of acute heart attack, stroke, etc.), statins have an important protective effect that should not be overlooked. In such a situation, they provide for a stabilisation and increased strength of these unstable plaques and are able to prevent such undesirable events.
Cardiovascular diagnostics
In addition to a good anamnesis (conversation between doctor and patient to record the medical history), which is very important to us, we also have the following diagnostic tools in the field of cardiovascular disease at our disposal:
ECG
Exercise ECG
Long term ECG
Long-term blood pressure measurement
Ultrasound heart and blood vessels
Laboratory
